What is Perimenopause and Menopause ?

Perimenopause is the time prior to menopause and it can start as early as the age 35.

Menopause is marked by one day. The day it has been 1 year since your last menstrual period or bleeding.

Perimenopause is transition that can last from 4-10 years and nutrition and lifestyle during this time play an important role in managing symptoms but also how you age.

There are over 100 documented symptoms that can occur during perimenopause and menopause. Some of the most common ones are:

  • sleep issues,

  • achy joints or muscles,

  • hot flashes and/or night sweats,

  • weight gain,

  • or mood issues such as depression,

  • fatigue,

  • decreased libido,

  • irregular periods,

  • vaginal dryness.

Many of the issues that come with perimenopause are related to hormone fluctuations.

During this phase in life proper nutrition and lifestyle factors are really important and can help decrease symptoms as well as decrease risk factors for health issues such as cardiovascular disease, sexual disfunction, and osteoporosis.
